What causes a sports injury?
Sports injuries can be caused by several reasons, including:
-
Not warming up before exercise
-
Training too hard or too frequently
-
Falling or encountering a heavy blow
-
Wrong technique
-
Using equipment incorrectly
Encountering a sports injury can be frustrating, especially when you just want to get back to playing the sport you love right away. Unfortunately regardless of what type of sports injury you have, it's going to affect your ability to get back to playing. Even if you put it off, it may have further consequences to your ability later on.
A lot of sports injuries can be minor, such as a sprain or strain. These can usually be treated at home, using the 'PRICE' technique.
What does PRICE stand for, and how can it help me?
Prince stands for protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation.
Protection: When you've picked up an injury you first need to protect it. Use some sort of support to help prevent any further injury.
Rest: You need to stop any activity and rest the injured muscle or joint.
Ice: After an injury, it can help to apply ice or ice packs to the injured area. Do this for 15 minutes every 2-3 hours.
Compression: During the day use a bandage or compression sock to limit movement and swelling.
Elevation: Whenever possible, keep the injured area raised, this can help further swelling.
Depending on severity of your sports injury, they can't always be treated at home and will require treatment from a specialist.
