Back pain Symptoms, causes & treatment

Back pain and particularly lower back pain is a common problem that most of us will face at some point in our lives. It can usually get better within a few weeks but sometimes back pain can last longer and start reoccurring.

At AS Sports Therapy we can help you diagnose, treat and manage your back pain. Let's look into the reasons why back pain occurs and how we can help you.

Symptoms

Symptoms of back pain can range from muscle aching to a shooting or stabbing sensation. The pain can also start to spread to other parts of your body particularly your legs and buttocks. This can depend on the which nerves have been affected.

You should always seek medical attention if you experience any numbness or tingling or your back pain doesn't improve with rest.

Causes

Back pain can be caused by many different things, and it's not always obvious what causes it. It's most often the case that the pain has been caused by muscles either being too weak, too tight or they're not in balance.

Back pain doesn't just happen over night, it can slowly creep up on us. With the demands of modern day life and the fact that many of us are now working from home, we aren't always move enough. As result, this over time can lead to back stiffness, pain and discomfort.

Common causes of back pain:

- Muscle or ligament strain - this could be from lifting something heavy awkwardly or from repetitive/overuse of a muscle.

- Staying in one position for too long, like sitting at a desk without regular breaks.

- Inactive lifestyle - prolonged inactivity is a leading cause of back pain. If we stay inactive for too long our muscles become weaker and smaller, and your back muscles will start to struggle with the demand. If we try to resume activity there will be less muscle mass to support you, causing further complications and further pain.

- Poor posture

- Sports injuries, particularly in sports that can involve twisting or large forces of impact.

Treatment

When you start getting back pain you may feel like you want to rest and reduce activity. An essential part of self-treatment and recovery is to remain active and continue exercising. Doing so is one of the best things you can do to for your health and will help reduce your back pain.  If you do reduce activity, this can lead to muscle decondition and it's likely your back pain will get worse.

So it's important you keep active.

Most cases of back pain tend to go away on their own after a while. Treatments available for persistent back pain include pain killers or medicines, which can help relax the muscles. Other treatments that you may be recommended include exercise and manual therapy.

AS Sports Therapy is a sports injury clinic in Berkhamsted that specialises in sports rehabilitation and prevention. We offer manual therapy treatment as effective treatment for back pain. We also provide you with exercise plans that you can do to help strengthen the muscles.

Manual therapy is an effective treatment used for treating back pain caused by muscle and soft tissue imbalances and weaknesses. As part of the manual therapy treatments we also use sports massage, joint mobilisations, range of motion exercises and myofascial release to help treat symptoms and muscular pain.
